Power chairs are ideal for getting around indoors. With great turning capabilities, they make maneuvering through hallways and doorways in the house easy.
Power chairs are a type of electric-powered wheelchair that is moved via the means of an electric motor(s) and a joystick or other navigational control. Sometimes referred to as an electric wheelchair or power wheelchair, power chairs offer superior in-home maneuverability. Powerchairs provide mobilty with a very broad range of seating, controls, and power options. This makes them suitable for folks with wide ranging requirements. Power chairs are primarily designed for people who need help getting around indoors, but some are rated for outdoor use and can be taken onto airplanes.
Usually a small joystick is mounted on the armrest on either the right or left side. For users who cannot manage a manual joystick, headswitches, chin-operated joysticks, sip-and-puff or other specialty controls may allow independent operation of the wheelchair. Powerchairs generally have a tighter turning radius than their cousin, the mobility scooter.
A power chair generally has six wheels and is steered using a joystick. Designs include front, mid, and rear wheel drive. All of these designs have their uses.
Powerchairs can be fitted with special controls and seating options that are customized to the individual. The broad range of options and user requirments often requires the participation of doctors, physical or occupational therapists and Assistive Technology Professionals (ATP) to determine the right equipment and customizations. Higher end power chairs can only be sold by through organizations that are licensed, professionaly certified, and has an ATP on staff. R Martin meets all of these requirements and has a RESNA certified ATP on staff that will work with you and your health care professionals to get you the right equipment.
Power options that are available on power chairs include seat lifts, recline, tilt in space, and standing options.
Power chairs start at around $1500 and can go to well over $30,000 for the most complex equipment.
